There have been numerous studies in recent years which have linked a wide array of antidepressant medications such as Zoloft to birth defects, as well as some other complications. These antidepressants, known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI’s) can heavily raise the risk of giving a child birth defects if taken during pregnancy.

As one of the major brands of SSRIs on the market, taking Zoloft during pregnancy can increase the risk of many different birth defects, especially if it is taken within the third trimester. Along with some of the other major antidepressants, the use of Zoloft during pregnancy has been linked to multiple developmental birth defects including persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN).

 What to Know

The FDA has issued a public health advisory which warned both consumers and health care professionals that Zoloft had previously been linked to some serious side effects when used during pregnancy, including life-threatening birth defects. The FDA has not calculated an official estimate of women and children at risk, but the number is certain to be high, as nearly 30 million Zoloft prescriptions are filled every year.

Possible Birth Defects

The use of Zoloft and other antidepressants during pregnancy has been linked to a number of different birth defects in children, including the following:

  • Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension of the Newborn (PPHN)
  • Atrial Septal Defect (ASD)
  • Tetralogy of Fallot
  • Transposition of the Great Arteries
  • Hypoplastic Right Heart Syndrome
  • Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome

Dangers and Side Effects

Along with the danger of birth defects that may occur with use during pregnancy, Zoloft can also produce some harmful side effects when taken. It has previously been linked with cases of psychological side effects such as suicidal behavior, violence and hostility. Along with these psychological side effects, there are also a host of other dangers that may arise following the use of antidepressants. Taking Zoloft at the same time as other medications has been known to cause extensive side effects, other injuries, and in some cases, become deadly.

Lawsuits

For women who have taken Zoloft during pregnancy or those who have experienced some of the side effects of the drug, contacting an attorney to discuss symptoms could be crucial. This process can often be greatly difficult and cause heavy emotional strain, especially for those who may have had a child with birth defects resulting from the use of antidepressants during pregnancy. With an increase in both controversy and warnings surrounding the use of Zoloft during pregnancy, litigation against the drug’s manufacturer Pfizer has also gone up. If it is determined that a valid case may be presented, an attorney may be able to help you hold Pfizer accountable and get the compensation that is deserved.
